In February, I was let go from Lawrence Tech University after the college basketball season after nearly three years at the helm. They wanted to have bigger plans going forward for the Spring Season and beyond and unfortunately, I wasn't going to be a part of it. Alec Sweet, the Content Producer of Yellow Flag Productions, said to me on the phone, "You are one of the most passionate play-by-play commentators I've had the pleasure to work with. You always shows up on time, always has a smile and in a good mood, well prepared for the game you is about to call. I wish you the best in your future endavors."

Not only I was devastated that I was let go, but at the same time, I was glad that I had the opportunity to call so many games for Lawrence Tech Men's and Women's Sports teams like soccer and basketball. I did a few lacrosse games and call a couple of softball games as well. To take away from the three years that I had with Lawrence Tech University, I gotta say that this was definitely the way to show my craft to everyone that I could do exactly what I needed to do in sports broadcasting. Now, the question is on my mind is "What's Next for Yohn Voker?" The answer: I'm just getting started!

Getting fired or being let go is a part of sports broadcasting industry. Sometimes you deserve it and sometimes you don't. But for most sports broadcasters getting fired - axed, let go, laid off, canned - at some point in their career. Sometimes we can turn it into a learning opportunity. These instances can be teachable moments for all aspiring sportscasters. Everything you do is part of building your reputation and brand. Facebook, YouTube, X, and the like are the all potential focal points of prospective employers or fans. Use them responsibly and at your own risk.

Sports Broadcasters must do everything in their power to protect their good name and reputation. Build your sports broadcasting career on a solid moral compass to prevent your career from being needlessly derailed. Take caution and remember why you have your platform in the first place. Good thing I tried to be careful with technology when I'm in the sports broadcasting industry.

Right now, I have a soccer podcast called "Minute 90" and also practicing calling some USL and NWSL games and working hard as I can be before I can have my big break. If anyone wants to check out my work, check out my reels and let me know what you think. Also, contact me via social medias @VokerOnAir (IG or X) or email (yohnvoker@gmail.com). My resume is on the resume and recommendation page and feel free to check it out as well. As a free agent sports broadcaster, I'm ready to any opportunity when the time is right.

Thank you so much for reading this blog and I can't to see what's next for me! To wrap up this blog, I'll say this, "Put that one on YouTube and like it!"
